Glossary

Common rummy terms in plain English.

A reader-facing glossary that covers the terms most likely to appear in a 13-card Indian rummy hand. Bilingual terms include the Devanagari form where useful.

  • Pure sequence (शुद्ध अनुक्रम)

Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, no wild joker in the chain. Required for a valid declaration.

  • Impure sequence

Three or more consecutive cards with one or more substitutions by the wild joker or printed joker.

  • Set (समूह)

Three or four cards of the same rank in different suits.

  • Wild joker (जोकर)

All cards of the rank shown on the flipped card at the start of the deal.

  • Printed joker

The joker card; counts as zero points and substitutes for any missing card.

  • First drop

Leaving the hand before picking up a card from stock.

  • Middle drop

Leaving after picking at least one card from stock but before melding.

  • Wrong show

A declaration with invalid groupings or extra cards; carries the table's maximum deadwood penalty.

  • Pool ceiling

The cumulative-score boundary (commonly 101 or 201) above which a player is eliminated.

  • KYC

Know Your Customer — the verification step that licenses operators must complete before authorising withdrawals.

How to use the glossary

Three suggestions for the reader who finds an unknown term mid-hand.

  • Read the glossary before sitting at a table, so the terms arrive in context.
  • Use the browser's in-page find to locate a term in the glossary — every term appears once.
  • If a term used by an operator does not appear here, ask the table's host before betting on its meaning.

Intermediate terms

Beyond the beginner list — terms that surface after a few sessions.

  • Undercut

In gin rummy, the loser outscores the knocker; the loser wins the hand and earns a bonus on the score difference plus the undercut points.

  • Big gin

In gin rummy, a hand where all eleven cards are in groups with no deadwood; the bonus is 31 points.

  • Spread

In gin rummy, a hand where the loser has spread deadwood above the threshold; the loser's card count is added to the winner's score.

  • Pool ceiling breach

The moment a player crosses the pool's cumulative-score boundary; the player is eliminated from the session.

  • Time-out reminder

A periodic on-screen notification showing session duration and net position. The most common responsible-play reminder.

Etiquette in two words

Terms older readers sometimes use, with their current meaning.

  • Show — declare. A "show" is the laying out of a completed hand at the end of a deal. Modern Indian platforms use "declare" more frequently.
  • Stock — the closed pile a player draws from. Older texts sometimes use "stock pile" or "talon".
  • Table — a single game instance. Larger operator lobbies host many tables simultaneously; each table has its own seat list.
  • Lobby — the screen listing available tables. The lobby can be filtered by format, stake, and table size.
